Mental Health Literacy is crucial to thriving in a complex world

As a seven-year-old watching my parents converse, I would keep a notebook with two columns – one for my mom and one for my dad. If one of them raised their voice, I would add a tally to their column. At the end of the conversation, I would give each parent their tally total.

Twenty years later, when I told my mom I was going to school for psychotherapy, she told me she was not surprised; my childhood self had already predicted my future.

But my journey to mental health work felt like a compilation of experiences – being a gay man in a straight man’s world and losing my dad at eleven years old – rather than a light bulb moment.

Today, I’m a psychotherapist with a private practice and a writer. My research and content focus on how you – someone without an advanced education in psychology – can contextualize mental health (mis)information and simplify the political & cultural landscape through psychology.

You can find my writings in my newsletter, Psychobabble,my content at @joenuccitherapy, and my debut book coming to booksellers near you in 2025.

I live in New York, where I run by the water, attend EDM concerts, and make friends in elevators.
